The United Arab Emirates has made yet another bold move to keep its competitive edge as a regional business powerhouse which is changing its marriage laws. Its a known fact that its personal status laws on marriage and divorce were previously based on Islamic sharia principles. However the new marriage laws seem to be in favor of many.

The latest news on the Abu Dhabi Marriage Law

The law includes civil marriage, divorce, alimony, joint child custody and proof of paternity, as well as inheritance. This is according to Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed al-Nahayan of Abu Dhabi, who is also president of the UAE federation of seven emirates.

According to a new order announced on Sunday by Abu Dhabi’s ruler, non-Muslims would be permitted to marry, divorce, and have shared child custody under civil law.

Final Verdict on the New marriage Laws

Last year, the UAE made a number of federal-level law changes, including decriminalizing premarital sexual encounters and alcohol consumption, as well as eliminating provisions for leniency in the case of so-called “honor killings.”

These reforms, along with other initiatives such as extending visas, have been viewed as a method for the Gulf state to become more appealing to foreign investment, tourists, and long-term residency.
